By the time Dragon’s captors finally settled down, his arms had long since gone completely numb and his skull felt like it was coming apart at the seams. The woman and the older man kept getting into minor squabbles, and once the younger man crossed the room to piss in the corner, from the sound of it. At last, though, after what felt like hours, all three lay unmoving long enough for their breathing to grow slow and deep.

Dragon waited a while longer before opening his eyes. He still had no idea how many people inhabited the rest of this building, but there was nothing to be done about it. He had to get out of here, and his only chance lay in freeing himself while the three in this room slept.

He looked around, careful not to move in case one of the three was awake after all. His head was tilted to his right, where the two older ones slept. The woman lay curled in the corner to the right of the window, one arm over her head. Blood trickled from her split lip. The old man sprawled on his back near the woman’s head, snoring.

Good. That took care of the two of them. Now he just had to make sure the younger man was asleep. Which meant he had to turn his head and look.

Dragon shut his eyes again first. He believed the other man was asleep, judging by the slow, regular rhythm of his breathing, but there was no sense in taking chances.

He let his head flop to the other side, as if he were turning in his sleep. The movement sent a sharp, sickening pain shooting through his head like an arrow. Ignoring it as best he could, he cracked his eyelids open just enough to peer through his lashes. The younger man lay on his side atop a large animal skin. His eyes were closed, his mouth slack with sleep.

Dragon let out the breath he’d been holding. So his captors were all asleep. Perfect.

Moving as slowly and carefully as possible, he rolled onto his right side. Mother, it hurt. Not a surprise, really. It was a miracle his neck hadn’t been broken. A few pulled muscles or a bone in his spine out of place would hardly be unexpected. Grimacing in pain and concentration, he used his bound feet to move his body while keeping his head still. If the rope around his neck was loose at the other end, fine. If it was tied to something that might fall over and wake everyone, though, he didn’t want to find out the hard way.

He’d almost gotten himself maneuvered into position when the rope pulled taut around his neck. He swallowed a curse. This didn’t bode well. Arching his back to create some slack on the restraint around his throat, he rolled his eyes upward until he could follow the line of the rope. It was knotted to a thick metal bolt in the wall.

He shut his eyes.
